Building Blocks
Location: Sure Start
Date: Spring / Summer 2003
Commissioning body: Bournemouth Borough Council, Poole Pottery
About the project:
To promote and recognise the role of artists working in communities.
To create high quality work made by an artist in collaboration with residents.
Sure Start is a government initiative designed to assist young families in deprived areas and to provide high quality nursery care, free of charge for the parents attending life skills training, from IT to creative courses. The Sure Start building was designed to act as a focal point for activities with the café as a meeting place.
The project involved the residents collecting tesserae to use in the project. Trudi visited the site before completion of the building and suggested a possible location for the final piece. Using the architecture and design features, together with the intended purpose of the building, the ‘Building Blocks’ design was proposed.
Trudi ran several workshops with parents, who worked on the planned shape and site. Using a digital camera, participants took photos of their children and transferred them to digital images. These were printed and used as a template for a mosaic. At this stage Trudi took the prepared pieces to her studio and translated them into the finished piece, subsequently returning to install the mural with assistance from the parents.

Ceramic, Tin, stained glass
