Location: Commercial Road, Bournemouth, Dorset
Date: January 2006
Commissioning body: Overton Development Ltd, Bournemouth Borough Council

About the project:
Retail developers, Overton Development Ltd liased with Bournemouth Borough Council to involve local people with the process of designing a mural for the West elevation of their new shopping precinct.
Trudi was commissioned to work with community groups, St. Paul’s Direct Access Hostel and Porchester School with  placement artist, Rose Perry.
Workshops in a disused beach café on Bournemouth sea front were offered to the hostel users where they explored ideas about self and local identity, using driftwood, sand and found objects creating collage and sculpture. Some individuals wrote poetry in response to their feelings.
The boys from Porchester School inspired by graffiti developed their own personal identities and tag making. The artists created their own responses to these themes and an exhibition of all the work was set up within the café.
The distillation of these ideas led to the final design; ‘Signature ‘ being presented to the steering group. This entailed a mosaic mural, a border of the graffiti designs by the boys, sections of poetry and sculptural detail by the hostel users. This led to a period within the studio working on the mosaic tesserae and developing the relief stainless steel sculpture with a metal fabricator. Final installation on the building site brought all the different components together.
