Seed Pod
Location: Hanger Farm, Arts Centre, Totton, Southampton
Date: December 2004
Commissioning body: New Forest District Council, Forest Arts Centre, Heritage Lottery Fund
About the project:
Trudi was commissioned to develop site specific work at Hanger Farm Arts Centre, Totton. An historic site dating back to the 1600’s with some of the original buildings still standing, most notably the Dutch barn; a huge structure with many original oak timbers.
With support from Heritage Lottery, the surrounding area was landscaped with the barn being the central feature. This housed the performing arts centre with up to the minute technology in this historic setting.
The artist’s brief was to create a piece of art that enhanced this unique environment involving the local community.
‘Seed Pod’ was the culmination of a period of consultation with the community and a series of workshops. The tiles were made locally at the brickworks in Michelmersh, where objects found from the site were hand pressed into the ‘green’ tiles. The egg like structure is an open framework of mild steel and perforated stainless steel sheet supporting the feathered tiles on the exterior and pale stone chippings on the interior. Situated on a grassy mound at the convergence of 2 footpaths, this sculpture creates an interplay of light and shade, casting shadows onto the clad barn.
Materials:
Mild Steel, copper, hand pressed clay tiles, stone chippings,
Dimensions:
1.8 m high x 1.5 m diameter
Associated projects:
